Social media revolutionized political participation possibilities, and movements like Fridays for Future (FFF) heavily rely on them. Consequently, understanding the factors driving the novel online modes of political participation is crucial.
Following from this, Cornelia Sindermann has recently published a paper on social media political participation in the context of the Fridays for Future movement. She explores the relations between diverse group identification components and social media political participation types in the context of FFF in two large samples, drawing on the Social Identity Model of Pro-Environmental Action.
In general, the results indicate that - similar to offline political participation - group identification is of relevance for social media political participation. Interestingly, different types of social media political participation are mostly predicted by diverse group identification components.
